As John reported earlier, the Anchorage Assembly passed an inclusive anti-discrimination ordinance last week. The Mayor of Anchorage sided with the gay bashers today and vetoed it:
Mayor Dan Sullivan today vetoed an ordinance that would ban discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people in Anchorage. The haters come out of the woodwork for stuff like this.
In a statement, Sullivan said he sees no need for the measure.
"My review shows that there is clearly a lack of quantifiable evidence necessitating this ordinance," the mayor said. "My review also shows that the vast majority of those who communicated their position on the ordinance are in opposition."
The Anchorage Assembly can override the veto but that requires eight votes. The initial measure passed by a 7 - 4 vote.
For the record, the former Mayor of Anchorage, Mark Begich, is now a United States Senator. So, far he's not a cosponsor of S. 1584, Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009. HRC did endorse Begich in his race against Ted Stevens last year.
