NM ranks 5th in same-sex households

New Mexico ranks fifth in same-sex households. I wouldn't have guessed it. You'd think the larger, more urban states would have the most -- not necessarily true at all.

This article is interesting and has a lot more important gay demographic information regarding the LGBT community. The information has been culled from the Williams Institute study on same-sex households here.

He also cited increased migration to the state. Nationally, Gates said, same-sex couples tend to congregate along the East and West coasts and in the Southwest, probably because many are at or near retirement age and able to relocate.

"New Mexico, relative to some other states, did in fact have a proportional larger population increase, which could contribute, somewhat, to why it has a higher increase in same-sex couples," Gates said. "But again, I think the bulk of that increase suggests increased acceptance and more people willing to report."

While Washington, D.C., had the nation's highest proportion of same-sex couples — 19 percent — only the states of Vermont, Massachusetts, California and Oregon had higher percentages than New Mexico.
New Mexico ranking fifth in same-sex households most definitely lends credence to its reputation as the Land of Enchantment!
