Joe wrote back in May about the potential for Tammy Baldwin to run for U.S. Senate. National Stonewall Democrats is announcing, today, that she is in.
"Wisconsin voters shouldn't send Tammy Baldwin to the Senate because it would be another first in a career full of them," said National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Michael Mitchell. "They should do it because she's the best candidate and will continue to put Wisconsin families first, just as she has throughout her career.I really like Baldwin. I had the pleasure of meeting her and her partner when my partner at the time, Tony Or, and I, were in DC to testify before the House Judiciary Committee to try to get the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes law passed.
"This will be a hard race for Tammy because special interests will use everything they can -- including her sexual orientation -- to try to defeat her. We must make sure that Tammy has everything she needs to win."
It isn't just the fact she is an open lesbian that makes me want to see her succeed. My personal impression of her was that she is very pleasant, warm and even has an affable quality, but there is also a fierce underlying intellect that shines through, and a tough-as-nails persona. Tammy Baldwin would be a perfect U.S. Senator and would make our community proud. The one thing I thought to myself after meeting her was, "Wow, her political enemies underestimate her at their peril."
Tammy Baldwin "Gets it!" and I hope she wins.
