Tammy Baldwin has a real shot at the US Senate, being a lesbian won’t matter

He doubts her sexual preference will come up much and says that “gay marriage will not be central.”

In the end, Maslin says, “I think it will be an unbelievably close election,” pointing to thin margins in other recent statewide races. “This looks like one of them, maybe a 10,000-vote election. I think she has a great opportunity of being on the right side of that 10,000 votes.”

There are other reasons for Baldwin optimism, Maslin says, including her fast start. It appears she has done much right already, he says, creating momentum and perhaps a path to the Democratic nomination without a significant primary foe.

“I think she has been very astute about how she has proceeded,” he says. “Sometimes the race does go to the swiftest.” While, most notably, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse has not announced his decision on entering the race, Baldwin appears to be in front in terms of visibility and raising money, Maslin says.
