Rachel Maddow worries that marriage equality may mean the end of gay culture

Hollywood Reporter:

"I feel that gay people not being able to get married for generations, forever, meant that we came up with alternative ways of recognizing relationships," she explains. "And I worry that if everybody has access to the same institutions that we lose the creativity of subcultures having to make it on their own. And I like gay culture."

I appreciate the concern. But I'm still not sure that I'd give up our freedoms in order to keep the culture. Maybe that's the price we pay to be equal. Though I somehow doubt that if marriage equality becomes the law of the land suddenly all gay men are going to want to hang out at Hooters. Our culture may change, we may assimilate more (which is ironic, since being accepted by society could lead to our assimilation rather than us choosing assimilation in search of acceptance). But I doubt gay culture is going away any time soon.
