ABC’s controversial new show has men dressing up as women

It's an interesting controversy.  ABC is in trouble with both HRC and GLAAD for its new show, "Work It," about two men who can't find a job, so dress up as women to get a job at a pharmaceutical company.  At issue is whether they're having a laugh at the expense of transgender people.

Now, you could argue that the characters on the show aren't trying to be trans, they're men pretending they're women in order to get a job, so this is different from anti-trans prejudice.  But is it?  Isn't the underlying joke that "guys don't dress like girls!"  And thus, the show implicitly mocks guys who do dress like girls, and vice versa.  Once upon a time such gags were funny - I'm talking, "White Christmas."  But times change.

Then again, the counter-argument to this is "Tootsie."  Was that movie a problem?  Would it be a problem today?  Clearly the movie was based on the "joke" that a man was dressing like a woman.  But the way the movie was handled was clearly pro-women (a guy learned about being a woman), and the trans questions wasn't really broached.  Or how about "Mrs. Doubtfire"?  Would that be okay today?

So there are two questions, at least.  Have times changed to a degree where none of these shows would be acceptable as new shows today?  And two, if Doubtfire and Tootsie are still okay, then what differentiates the ABC show (which I haven't seen)?
