Santorum was apparently surprised that he got a gay marriage question from a college crowd in NH, that subsequently booed his bigoted answer.
He was surprised that college students would ask him about gay marriage? Why? Because Santorum is woefully out of touch, and actually probably does believe that all this gay stuff is simply ginned up by a small core of crazy gay activists, rather than a lot of people in this country, straight people, agree with us. And among youth, that number soars.
Here's Leonard Pitts Jr. in the Miami Herald, in another part of his essay on Santorum's revelation, talking about the historical pattern of bigotry of people like Santorum:
There is an absolute historical pattern to the bigotry of social conservatives. They rally using terms of moral Armageddon against the freedoms sought by some despised or condescended to Other, whether that be a woman wanting to work outside the home, a Jew seeking to join the country club, an African American trying to get home on a city bus. Then the freedoms are won, and people — even socially conservative ones — realize the world kept spinning after all. Armageddon did not come. Only change.That was an African-American op ed writer evoking the freedom struggle of Jews, blacks and gays all in one sentence. Mm hmm.
