The haters helped us get another vote, this time in Colorado. State Senator Nancy Spence has a message for her GOP colleagues about supporting the civil unions bill. She gets where the trendline is leading. And, she was apparently put off by the homophobes:
It wasn’t a surprise when Republican Sens. Jean White and Ellen Roberts voted for a civil-unions bill, but Nancy Spence’s “yes” vote was another matter. The vehement homophobia of the haters also helped us pick up a supporter in the Maryland Senate.
The Centennial senator, who has been a lawmaker since 1998, has not supported earlier gay-rights issues — until now.
“I’m mindful of the change that has taken place in society, and the changes that should take place in the Republican Party if we don’t want this issue to keep dividing us,” she said. “We need to be willing to open our minds to issues that we’ve been close-minded about.”
Spence said she also was influenced by what she called the “disappointing” testimony and behavior of opponents when the bill was before a Senate committee. She saw one person outside the Capitol with a sign that read “God hates fags.” One opponent described anal sex in great detail.
The civil unions bill passed in the Colorado Senate. The big question is what will happen in the GOP-controlled House.
