That's nice. Seriously. It's a visible job, and it doesn't hurt to have someone gay in a position that's that visible. But he's not White House chief of staff, deputy chief of staff, a cabinet secretary, a federal judge (we have two, out of more than 1,300), or really any senior staff position at the White House in a policy area. Gays are MIA in all of the above.
I'm glad the President appointed someone openly gay as his campaign spokesman. Now appoint someone openly gay to a policy position that matters in the White House, come out in favor of marriage, and issue the executive orders on ENDA and DADT, and then we'll really have to something to cheer.
