Growing up gay or transgender in Appalachia

| Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK

One of the reasons I appreciate writing for AMERICAblog Gay is that I live in an area of the country, the diamond in the buckle of the bible belt, that is more than ripe for change. I can't think of anywhere, except for maybe Appalachia, that might be ground zero for change. Which brings us to this article from the Atlantic. The Kentucky Equality Federation is focusing on preserving stories, in their Storycorps project, of growing up gay or transgender in the mountains of Appalachia to be stored for posterity in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Anything that brings cultural attention and greater voice to the sometimes hidden LGBT community in areas like this is promising. In the words of Martha Stewart, "It's a good thing."
