Californians: Tell Governor Brown to sign SB 48, The FAIR Education Act

Two of our favorite Californians have been sounding the alarm about SB 48, The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful Education Act, which passed the Legislature and has been sitting on Governor Brown's desk for a week now.

Last week, Rex Wockner gave us a heads up about the bill:

A bill by out state Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) that would require schools teach about the historical contributions of LGBT people is headed to the desk of Governor Jerry Brown after it passed the Assembly Tuesday, July 5.

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful Education Act, or SB 48, amends the state Education Code to require that schools teach about LGBT people's role in – and contributions to – the economic, political, and social development of California and the U.S.

Brown has not addressed whether he supports the bill.

"The governor does not weigh in on legislation before it reaches his desk," said Brown spokesman Evan Westrup.
Okay. It's reached the Governor's desk. Been there for a week.

Today, Karen Ocamb says make the calls because the other side is "bombarding" the Governor:
Gov. Jerry Brown may have a long history of being pro-gay – but he also has a long history of being pro-farm worker and yet he recently vetoed a bill dear to the United Farm Workers. Brown, remember, has an even longer history of being unpredictable.

So it is imperative that the LGBT community swamp his office NOW with calls and emails telling him to sign SB 48 – the California FAIR Education Act. This bill would provide students in public schools with accurate, fair and positive images and information about LGBT people and our contributions. The Religious Right – including the LA Catholic Church – is claiming that the bill would “sexualize” education and is reportedly bombarding his office with calls to VETO the bill. Brown has until Monday to sign, veto or let the bill go into effect without his signature.
The Governor's office number is 916-445-2841. He needs to hear from our side.

More from Karen:
Call Brown’s office NOW – 1-916-445-2841. This is an automated line. You will be asked if you want English or Spanish. You will then be asked if you want to express your opinion on legislation – that’s option #2. You will then be asked if you’re calling about SB 48 – prohibition against discriminatory education – press #1. Then you will be asked if you want to support – press #1. PLEASE NOTE: the automated message is a bit finicky – please wait until the guy finished before pressing your option.
Work those phones. This should be a no-brainer. But, the homophobes are desperate for a veto.
